The Art Gallery opened its new season with “Hantohand” by two outstanding Turkish painters; Zafer Gençaydın and Cezmi Orhan on Thursday, October 8. The opening ceremony attracted great attention with considerable involvement of art lovers, ranging from different ages to different cultures and nationalities. Visitors had the chance to get acquainted with artists and discuss the works on display.
Zafer Gençaydın is a reformer, a well-known international artist with more than 30 exhibitions. He has won several awards both in Turkey and abroad. Cezmi Orhan, who is has won Turkey’s major State Painting Contest twice, has opened many personal exhibitions and is known for his reforms. Bringing them together in this exhibition shows their “abstract expressionist” paintings, generating a collection of several oil canvases in different sizes.
A brief explanation of abstract expressionism: It is simply a bit different in style and a complex art movement. Abstract expressionism emphasizes spontaneous subconscious, and instead of “clear” representations of objects, prefers expressing color or shape an “abstract” way.
Zafer Gençaydın calls this “The pure reflection of inner world.”
Even though these are not easily understandable works of art, their essence still comes from the dynamic processes of human beings, nature and social events that we are all familiar with. For this reason everyone can find something to relate to when looking at works of abstract expressionism. I heartily suggest this diverse experience to all art lovers at the Library Art Gallery, located in Main Campus Library. The exhibit runs through to Tuesday, November 3 between 10:30 a.m and 6 p.m. except Sundays.
