Tennis Anyone?
Students Say On-Court Classes Serve Up Relaxation and Fun

Whether your goal is to become a competitive player or just to have fun and relax, Bilkent's tennis courses have something for you. In fact, many students take the classes not so much to learn the sport itself, but for the benefits the classes bring to other parts of their lives. "I do it to get rid of stress because it is very relaxing," said Özge Özdemer, a first year Landscape, Architecture and Urban Design (LAUD) student. "It doesn't take lots of time and by doing it you increase your strength." Fellow LAUD student Tolga Zengin takes the class for similar reasons. "For me, it's like a break in lessons. It refreshes my body," he said.

While Özge and Tolga simply enjoy the exercise, the classes are designed for students with varying needs. "As a U.S. Professional Tennis Registry Certified Instructor, I believe when a student initially comes to tennis courses, they are not necessarily looking to learn techniques like the serve, forehand, backhand or volley, although these are taught. They also want to have fun, exercise and get rid of stress," said Alper Uğraş, Assistant Director of the Sports Center.

No matter what their motivation, Bilkent students enjoy the sport while using outstanding indoor and outdoor facilities. "Other universities do not have the high-quality facilities we have here, so I think more students should take advantage of this opportunity," said third year Interior Architecture and Environmental Design student Elçin Akman.
