Students Should Show ID More, Smoke Less

Dear Editor,

I have two points to discuss: the ID checks and smoking.

It's a well-known fact that IDs are not checked regularly and properly. Drivers do it in the morning if they are in the mood. Anyone who can reach the East Campus gate can easily enter the campus without having their ID checked because students who get off the buses at the gate and walk to their departments are not checked. It is also possible to wait for a Ring bus and enter the Main Campus without being asked to show an ID. In this sense, entering Real is much more difficult.

The other point involves Bilkent students' smoking habits. It is almost impossible for a non-smoker to leave the Hazırlık building on East Campus during breaks. One must keep his breath until he gets out of the open-air gas chamber set up in front of the building at every break. It will not be a surprise for future Bilkent administrators to find out that those who graduated from Bilkent 40 years ago died mostly of lung or throat cancer. If you think this is a matter of free will, then I would like to remind you that smoking is a habit that affects the brain, the organ where learning takes place.
