Fatih Altaylı Talks on Media
|
Last week, Fatih Altaylı, who writes a daily column for Hürriyet, was invited to the university by the Media Club, Yeni Ufuklar, and CDPC to talk about his profession. In his speech Mr. Altaylı gave students insights into the benefits and drawbacks of a career in the media. He believes that newpaper writing is a product that writers should market. One should know one's audience, and have some idea of reader expectations.
In Turkey, he said, printed news is the only product that has not experienced an increase in sales. This might be because newspapers cover a limited number of topics, targeting a small group and thus failing to reach larger audiences.
Mr. Altaylı predicts that that the Internet will be an essential part of the media industry in the near future. He believes that publishing Hürriyet in English on the web would open the doors of Turkey to the world, and make the newspaper more international in character. For students who are thinking of getting into the field, he suggests that news is one of the most quickly and frequently consumed commodities. A successful media career thus requires the ability to quickly adjust to changing circumstances.
