New M.Ed. Program to Produce Cutting-Edge Teachers
In September 2000, Bilkent University will open a Master's program in teacher education for graduate students who wish to teach in Turkish high schools. Graduates of the teacher education program will be a new type of high school teacher.

New M.Ed. Program to Produce Cutting-Edge Teachers
Special features: The new four-semester program at Bilkent University will produce fully-qualified high school teachers.

It will be the first such program of its kind because students will:

  • have teaching formation courses and also immersion in relevant subject courses,
  • become familiar with well-known high schools such as BUPS and Bilkent High School, TED Ankara College, Robert College in Üstanbul, and Üzmir American Collegiate Institute,
  • spend an 8-week internship in high schools in the United States. There they will take part in school life and work with American teachers in their classrooms,
  • receive a fellowship which covers tuition fees, as well as the expenses of the U.S. internship.

About Teaching: Teaching is a career with many satisfactions: teachers work with people all day long, they influence and shape the lives of the students in their care, and they are the most important factor in how much students learn at school. High school teachers are particularly important: they contribute to the development of their students into young adults, they work closely with motivated colleagues, with the students' parents, and in the local community, and they organize extra-curricular activities such as sports, music, or visits. They have many opportunities for life-long learning.

Details for Applicants: The Master's program will open in four subject areas: Turkish Language and Literature, English, History, and Biology. Students who want to be trained to be a teacher in the following areas and have a degree in one of the subjects (given in parentheses) below may apply:

Turkish Language and Literature (all Language, Literature, Translation and Interpretation degrees), English (all degrees taught in English), History (History, International Relations, Political Science, Archaeology, History of Art), Biology (Biology, Biochemistry, Molecular Biology and Genetics, Food Engineering, and other biology-related degrees).

To apply, download an application form from www.bilkent.edu.tr/bilkent/, complete it, and bring it to the Registrar's Office between May 22 and June 19. A good knowledge of English is essential, plus a keen interest in working with school students. For further enquiries e-mail teached@bilkent.edu.tr or call ext. 2950/2951.

Job Opportunities: Graduates will be well-qualified to gain posts in prestigious high schools in Turkey. They will be agents for change and will have great potential to contribute to the profession and become educational leaders.
