Leonid Danylovych Kuchma, President of the Ukraine since 1994 and previously its Prime Minister, is to be awarded an honorary doctorate by Bilkent University. The special ceremony will take place at the FMPA Concert Hall on Thursday, November 23 at 5 p.m. Everyone is invited to attend and to hear the Ukrainian president's speech.
Mr. Kuchma is an initiator of the Ukraine's new economic and political reform, and his diplomacy has made possible the signing of large scale international agreements with Russia, Romania, Poland and NATO. He is renown for leading the Ukraine in the formation of its newly considered foreign policy - one which voluntarily limits the development of nuclear installations.
A brilliant engineer, scientist and inventor, Mr. Kuchma has designed and managed complex space programs, as well as several major defence conversion projects. He is a Lenin Prize winner, laureate of the National Prize of the Ukraine in science and technology, and holds honorary doctorates from leading international universities.
Leonid Kuchma's vision, leadership and political courage have contributed to the development of a new image for the Ukraine, both in his own country and around the world.
