Occasionally, when newcomers watch a badminton match, they come away with the illusion that it's an easy sport and that all you have to do is smack the shuttle across the net. But playing the game is actually very strenuous! It requires 100 percent alertness and you need to be exceptionally quick on the rebound. Actually badminton is a game much like tennis. Both are played with similarly shaped rackets and with the same objective in mind. But badminton rackets are much lighter than their counterparts in tennis, and a shuttle with a rubber cork on its end replaces the tennis ball. Good badminton players need both agility and skill and it is a game that is graceful as well as energetic.
Every Friday and Saturday from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. at Bilkent's Main Campus Sports Center, badminton is a regular feature and played with great enthusiasm. Badminton classes are open to both students and academic staff, so drop by and take part in the fun of learning to play. You won't be disappointed and you're sure to be challenged by this truly exciting game.
