Erdal İnönü Discusses Science and Culture
Erdal İnönü, one of Turkey’s previous deputy prime ministers, also a physicist and a writer, spoke to Bilkent students on Science and Culture on Friday, February 23.İnönü with members of Ekonomi ve Endüstri Kulübü Professor İnönü was invited by the Ekonomi ve Endüstri Kulübü to discuss issues affecting scientific research in Turkey. During his talk, he emphasized Turkey’s research potential, but underscored that Turkish culture has not been very supportive of scientific research.

Aside from his political life, Professor İnönü’s academic life includes teaching positions at METU and Bosphorus University as well as acting as a Rector at METU. In his talk he strongly suggested that scientific research is necessary in order to increase a society’s quality and standard of living. Unless the government encourages scientific research it will be more difficult for Turkey to reach its potential.

His last comment to the audience was to advance the sciences and scientific research as much as possible for Turkey’s sake.
