Library Archives Turkish Plastic Arts
̃elale Korkut, Head, Art Library
The Turkish Plastic Arts Archive is a collection of the printed materials of the Turkish art scene, specifically the plastic arts. The goal of the archive, founded in 1990, is to make the work of modern Turkish artists more accessible and to provide a lasting document of their activities. It is a rich resource including articles from daily papers and journals, gallery brochures, invitations to openings, posters, reproductions, bulletins, and calendars. The catalog includes 8,534 newspaper clippings, 4,621 exhibition invitations, 99 brochures, 290 posters, 309 reproductions, 6,166 journal articles, 62 bulletins, 800 exhibition catalogs, and 28 calendars. In addition to the archive, the Arts Room of the Library houses a collection of more than 22, 600 art books and art references on Turkish Plastic Arts.

To create the archive, the staff thoroughly researched 12 newspapers and 59 journals, indexing all relevant articles following a set of specific selection criteria. Newspapers from 1988 to the present have been indexed, whereas journals have been indexed from 1935 to the present.

The index to journal articles can be searched online as part of the catalog for the Turkish Plastic Arts Archive. At present, there are 2,555 individual artists with a file in the archive. Bilkent Library aims to inform everyone interested in plastic arts about this archive service, as it is the only one in Turkey. They want artists to take an interest in the archive, and contact the library with further information to add to their files.

The archive is open weekdays from 9 a.m. until 5:30 p.m. Materials are available for research and photocopying. For more information check the web site at http://library.bilkent.edu.tr/tpsa.htm or contact ̃elale Korkut at ext. 1535.
