Privacy Concerns to be Discussed
It used to be that only revolutionaries, criminals and celebrities were worried about their privacy. Today, however, privacy has become something that we all need to be concerned about. Computers and the Internet allow massive amounts of information to be collected and organized by advertising companies, government departments, hospitals and businesses.

While this may seem innocent, mergers, bankruptcies, open government and efficiency measures, mean that information gathered in one context is being combined and used in quite different ones, and for different purposes. Knowledge of your medical history might end up being used to refuse you jobs or insurance. Data collated from diverse sources may be used to "steal your identity," allowing goods and services to be obtained fraudulently in your name. With webcams monitoring city streets and companies regularly reading their employees email -in violation of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights- privacy is fast disappearing.

If you are concerned about your privacy in the Information Age consider attending the InSites meeting on Wednesday, March 28 at 5:40 p.m. in room BZ08 of the B-Building (BCC). A short documentary will be shown, followed by open discussion. For further details go to http://goto.bilkent.edu.tr.
