Student-Founded Firms Compete in "Stock Market"
Senior year students in Innovative Product Design and Development GE401-402, are currently at the stage of selling shares for the companies they established last fall.

Four fictitous innovative companies, Crein Technologies, DigiKervan, D.D.D. Digital Electronics, and Seetoshop, target different customers. Crein Technologies’ product is a restaurant automation system called e-menu, which improves the quality and the speed of service at restaurants. D.D.D. Digital Electronics produces an integrated barcode scanner and shopping cart system that aims to eliminate checkout delays at supermarkets. DigiKervan produces scheduling software for bus companies and internet kiosks to facilitate ticket reservations and sales. Seetoshop is an apparel retailer operating on the WWW, whose aim is to take advantage of the advanced but inexpensive textile industry in Turkey. All four companies use the highest technology available and the most developed techniques of production and marketing.

At the beginning of March 2001, each company sold 32% of its shares to the Investment Banker, Dr. Kürşat Aydoğan (Dean, Faculty of Business Administration). Half of these shares were then allocated to about 20 traders (professors in various departments of Bilkent University) who can trade the shares once a week in a virtual stock market. The six-week experience has shown that the traders take into account the progress each firm has made in maturing its product into a marketable one, as well as the trends in major international stock markets. For example, in parallel to the downward trend in the prices of international e-business firms, Seetoshop has suffered losses. DigiKervan is doing very well since the traders have optimistic expectations about the reception of their product by the Turkish market.

The progress of each company is under the close scrutiny of the Venture Capitalists: Dr. S. Aktürk (Industrial Engineering), Dr. K. Aydoğan (Management), Dr. M. Baray (Computer Engineering), Dr. B. Özgüç (Graphic Design), Dr. B. Özgüler, and Dr. T. Reyhan (Electrical and Electronics Engineering). These six GE-402 coordinators are extremely concerned whether the firms will make good use of the money they have invested!
