Young Bilkent Musicians Participate in Orchestral Academy
In what could be the beginning of a great international career, three Bilkent students will participate in the international Orchestral Academy of the Schleswig-Holstein Music Festival in the north of Germany this summer. Ayşe Özge Erdem, a violinist, is a fourth year undergraduate at Bilkent. Two BUPS high school students, Müfit Şahbudak and Utku Ünal, both play French horn. Together they will join other young musicians from around the world for the opportunity to perform great works with famous conductors as members of the Festival Orchestra. Having passed a juried audition, the participants will receive a stipend including travel expenses, room and board, and tuition.

The Orchestral Academy, founded in 1987 by Leonard Bernstein, will be held from July 4 to August 28 in the Salzau Castle. There, the participants will have two or three rehearsals a day and will present a few concerts per week. In addition to the concerts at Schleswig-Holstein, the Orchestral Academy 2001 will present a concert in Berlin, a tour throughout the Baltic region, a performance at the Helsinki Festival, and finally a performance in Copenhagen’s famous "Tivoli".

Mahir Çakar, the advisor and instructor of the Bilkent participants emphasizes what a special opportunity this is for the students. "The orchestra will have eight French horns from around the world, and two of them are from Bilkent. This is something very nice both for Bilkent University and for Turkey to have three students represented in the Orchestral Academy."
