SQ 2001 Exhibits Students’ Creativity

industry, browsed the projects on display and evaluated them in terms of originality, technical merit, documentation and presentation. Mustafa Demirhan’s (EE/IV) “Macro Angel” scheduling and automation program took the first place prize of $1000 plus software valued at $3000. (He also designed a program which took second place at last year’s Software Quest.) Mustafa explained, “It is a hobby. I have been working at developing software programs for about eight years.” Aydemir Memişoğlu’s (CS/V) image deformation software took second place, and Ömer Boyacı’s (CS/II) “Online Dukkan” took third place. The three students were presented their prizes by Sun Microsystems.
The winners of this year’s Software Quest Trivia quiz were the green team of Hur Kornes, Kerem Yücetürk and Aylin Koca. The yellow team of Ali Sinop, Turgay Yılmaz and Şevki Dinçer followed closely for second place. Two teams, the red team comprised of Uğur Öztürk, Buğra Gedik and Seymus İnci, and the blue team comprised of İsmail Cenik, Onur Özyer and Mehmet Çakır, tied for third place. The prizes, presented by Vice Rector, Dr. Erol Arkun, included software donated by Microsoft. Members of the audience, who correctly answered questions that the teams could not, received a bag of goodies from Sun and local computer supplier, EdeCom.
The annual Software Quest contest provides a unique platform for students to exhibit their work, and thereby to encourage and challenge others. In this way, it aims to promote quality software development throughout Turkey. Planning is already underway for Software Quest 2002. Programmers, take note, you have less than 12 months to give birth to your entry for next year’s contest! See http://goto.bilkent.edu.tr for details and photographs from SQ2001.
