INSITES - Making Sense of the Internet

In the beginning there was HTML, and it was “OK.” But slowly, out of the primordial alphabet soup, all manners of wonderous concoctions appeared -CGI, CSS, DHTML, ASP, JSP, PHP & XML. And Bill saw that this was good and worked tirelessly for six days and nights to shape it. On the seventh day (when he finally took a momentary break -to respond to the Judge?) he looked down on .NET and eXPerienced great joy.
INSITES is an open interdisciplinary research group that aims to promote better understanding of the technical, social and philosophical aspects of the internet. Anyone interested in these issues is welcome to join our discussion meetings, seminars, projects and tutorials, details of which can be found on the web at http://goto.bilkent.edu.tr/insites. By bringing together people from vastly different backgrounds, INSITES provides unique opportunities for everyone to learn from each other and thereby gain insights into this confusing new world.
This week, we will start with a seminar entitled “The Price of Freedoms” by David Davenport, which argues against the prevailing Internet wisdom that sees annonymity as the basis of the web. Everyone is cordially invited to room EA-501 (Engineering building) at
5:40 p.m. on Thursday, November 15. Look for upcoming discussion sessions on such topics as “Education in the Internet Age”, “E-democracy” and “Intellectual Property”, and, in conjunction with the “İnternet ve İnsan” club, a series of introductory tutorials on creating webpages, webpage design & web technologies.
