Rhythm and Grace, The Art of Folkdancing
|
Folkdancing is a tradition in many countries in the world and Turkey is no exception, with a rich culture of folkdances particular to each region. Folkdancing transmits a knowledge of cultural traditions and is also a powerful means of promoting community values and team work.
Finally it is an enjoyable way to get physically fit! The Physical Education and Sports Center offers Turkish Folk Dancing courses from different regions of Turkey, including: Aydın Zeybek, Gaziantep, Anadolu’dan Esintiler, and the newly opened Bilecikkız, Ankara Seğmen and Kırklareli.
Turkish Folk Dancing instructor Kadri Yersiz says that “Folk Dancing is a very good example of team work. The first dancer and the 18th dancer of the line do exactly the same steps. It also improves the dancers’ sense of rhythm and provides a nice atmosphere where everyone can both relax and workout. We invite all interested students to come and join us. Also, those who are at the intermediate level can join the university folkdancing team which represents Bilkent in several contests throughout Turkey.
