Letters to the Editor

In our last issue, we replied to a letter from Tim Roberts / Department of History, concerning traffic safety issues along Bilkent 1st Street and East Campus. In keeping with our policy, we would like to update our readers as to what is currently being done. In this regard the chairperson of the Traffic Committee provided the following information:
“We fully appreciate your concern related to the traffic on Bilkent 1st Avenue. Traffic has become an issue that needs to be dealt with, especially given the growing number of people moving into the housing facilities in the Bilkent III region.
The Bilkent University Traffic Committee has always felt it an essential duty to encourage safety not only on campus, but also on roads outside the campus, even though these roads are not under the jurisdiction of the University.
For example, requests made to the Ankara Police Department have ensured more frequent patrolling of the Eskişehir Highway. Similarly, meetings with the Jandarme have led to speed monitoring on the main road leading from Bilkent to the Eskişehir Highway.
Steps have also been taken to inform the Jandarme that the traffic on Bilkent 1st Avenue needs to monitored. Also, the East Campus bus stop will be moved to the school side of 1st Street, making it a safer place for everyone.
We would also like to take this opportunity to inform you that we are now in the process of formally applying to the General Directorate of Highways and the Metropolitan Municipality to have speed bumps and traffic lights installed at specific points along Bilkent 1st Avenue. We have pointed out that this road runs through an area with an elementary school, therefore strengthening our plea for immediate attention regarding traffic lights and speed controlling devices.
We would like to thank you once again for raising this important matter, and hope that the precautions outlined above will soon be realized.”

Dear Editor,

Many students living in the dormitories, including myself, would appreciate it if the Bilkent News might address the issue of the Ring Bus services, in particular departures from East campus. There is not a problem in the morning, but when we have classes in the afternoon we have to take the early ring bus and have to wait a long time on main campus until our classes begin.
We would like to have more options with scheduled bus hours, especially in the afternoons. I think adding some buses (e.g. 14:20, 15:20,16:20 etc.) would solve this problem!

Ahmet Şahin (IE/I)

Response to the letter:
Dear Ahmet Şahin, There are currently Ring Busses to Main Campus departing 13:40 for those students having a 14:40 class. We realize that this bus does get you to campus early for your class but due to the low numbers of students riding the busses in the afternoons, at the present time this is the best we can do. However, if there are sufficient numbers of students needing a 14:10 bus we will add one.
