During the past several weeks, five young Bilkent musicians received first-place awards at competitions held in Italy, Germany and Turkey.
Belit Çiftçi won first prize in age 10 group in the violoncello category A at the Eighth International “Musical Fireworks” Competition held in Baden-Württemberg, Germany, the last week of March. Her brother, Kuzey Çiftçi, a graduate of the Bilkent University Music Preparatory Elementary School, accompanied her on the piano. Belit is a student in Serdar Rasul’s violoncello class.
Arcan İsenkul, a seventh-year violin student in the Bilkent Music Middle School, won a first prize at the Ninth International Young Musicians Competition held by the Antonio Salieri String Instrument Association and School in Legnago, Italy, during the first half of April. Arcan studies with Ece Akyol.
Çetin Özen and Elman Mecid both won first prizes at the Marimba Festival competition held in Bamberg, Germany, during the first week of April. Çetin, a seventh-grader in the Bilkent University Music Preparatory Middle School who studies with Aydın Mecid, won first prize in the 12–15 age category. Elman Mecid, a graduate of the Bilkent University Music Preparatory High School and currently a student at the Hochschule für Musik und Theater in Hamburg, Germany, collected all of the awards in the 18–21 age category – not only first prize, but also the Sonderpreis des Bayerischen Rundfunks award, the “Marimba One” award and an award for best interpretation of a set piece, as well as a scholarship to attend the 2019 International Katarzyna Mycka Marimba Academy.
Özberk Miraç Sarıgül, an eleventh-grade student at the Bilkent University Music Preparatory High School, won a first prize at the Fifth International İstanbul Guitar Festival, held earlier this month. Özberk studies with Kağan Korad.
