Students enrolled in the BIM 426 Small Group and Team Communication course have the opportunity to combine the theoretical knowledge they have learned in the classroom with field experience to create positive social change. In previous years, students taking the course have carried out projects in collaboration with various foundations, enabling them to increase their awareness of the issues faced by less fortunate members of society.
This semester, students in the course are working with the Autism Foundation. The United Nations General Assembly has designated April 2 as World Autism Awareness Day, and all of April as World Autism Awareness Month in order to highlight the need to help improve the quality of life of those with autism so that they can lead full and meaningful lives as an integral part of society.
Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is a complex developmental disorder that appears before age three. In Turkey, one child out of 68 is diagnosed with ASD.
Throughout the semester, Bilkent students will carry out activities with members of the Autism Foundation. Through increasing their own awareness of ASD, they will be able to raise awareness in the society that they are a part of. The students say that being part of such a unique experience is greatly motivating, and that they are proud to be able to give back to society by participating in this project.
