Last week, the Department of Communication and Design marked its 20th anniversary with a series of events, bringing the Bilkent COMD community together to honor the department’s contributions to the field of communication and design.

The four-day celebration started with screenings of selected short films by COMD students during the noon hour on Wednesday, December 12. The “Lunch-Time Shorts” event continued over the next two days with additional film screenings, augmented by “Shorts from the Archive” on Thursday evening.

The program for Friday, December 14, started with a keynote speech by journalist and former COMD instructor Murat Yetkin, titled “20 Yılda Nereden Nereye?” (Looking Back Over 20 Years). Mr. Yetkin spoke about COMD’s beginnings as a pioneering communication and design department in Turkey. His remarks were followed by a vibrant “Life After COMD” conversation by several alumni, who spoke about how the foundation they received as COMD students led them to build noteworthy careers as TV hosts, journalists, film producers and design professionals; they also answered questions from current students about their fields of work.

The anniversary celebration wrapped up on Saturday, December 15 with a gala event followed by a party. Attendees at the gala included former Faculty of Art, Design and Architecture deans Prof. Bülent Özgüç and Prof. Ayhan Altıntaş. The program began with introductory remarks by FADA’s acting dean, Prof. Erdal Erel, followed by a presentation from COMD department chair Andreas Treske, who gave an overview of department’s history and presented plaques to notable COMD collaborators. The program also included screenings of award-winning COMD videos, and a clip of Fazıl Say’s latest concert with the Bilkent Symphony Orchestra, a first-time live-recording event carried out by students in the COMD308 Multi-Camera Production and Live Recording course.

The program ended with a COMD alumni party at the venue GAGA Manjero, where COMD alumni and faculty also performed live.
