On December 18, as part of Bilkent’s partnership with Children Are the Hope (CATH), a team of students and faculty members from Özel Bilkent Middle School led a day-long service activity in the Mamak district of Ankara for students served by the Association for Solidarity with Asylum Seekers and Migrants (ASAM). CATH, a nonprofit organization based in the US state of Wisconsin, is dedicated to fostering connections among children from different countries and has engaged thousands of children through its environmental, cultural and art education programming.
The day’s activities included peer-teaching about the organization as well as art activities that included mask and paper plate painting, origami, and the creation of a peace-themed mural. “The ASAM and Özel Bilkent Middle School students experienced the joy of friendship, collaboration and sharing through this unique endeavor,” noted representatives of the middle school.
The CATH project has been running between Özel Bilkent Middle School students and students from partner schools in Wisconsin since 2015. For the 2017–2018 academic year, the CATH project at Özel Bilkent Middle School was awarded a grant from the US Department of State. Through this funding, the school’s students were able to reach many local and refugee students from various schools in Ankara.
