On October 31, Dr. Nedim Karakayalı (Department of Political Science) and Dr. Clemens Hoffmann (Department of International Relations) gave a talk entitled ”Why Do a PhD?” as part of the FEASS Doctoral Workshop series. The speakers reflected upon the reasons  people decide to do PhDs and shared their own experiences about the challenges of the PhD process with FEASS doctoral students. These challenges varied, Dr. Karakayalı and Dr. Hoffmann noted, from finding a good topic and understanding the literature to time management and financial problems. During the question and answer session that followed, doctoral students had a unique opportunity to discuss these and other issues with faculty members.

The FEASS Doctoral Workshops are designed to prepare students for local and global academic and non-academic career paths. The workshops also provide additional guidance and support to help PhD students complete their degrees in a timely fashion.

The next workshop, to be given by Dr. Can Mutlu (Department of International Relations), will be on November 28. Dr. Mutlu will speak on the topic of “Qualitative Research in the Social Sciences.”
