Bilkent Basketball Winning Streak Continues!

been so close. As a result, the second period ended with Bilkent up 31-26. In the beginning of the third, Bilkent still seemed to lack the desire to dominate the game. However, after a few minutes the team started to lighten up a bit. No:8 (Serter) scored two consecutive three pointers. Then, with several fast-breaks, the gap widened to 16 points. At the end of the third period, the score was 53 to 45 with Bilkent leading. The fourth and the decisive period began with wrong shot choices and weak defending which led to Koç catching up with Bilkent and even getting ahead 55 to 56 at one point.
With 11 seconds left in the game, Bilkent messed up a really crucial offense and after that turn-over, hopes had diminished substantially. The tactical foul came very late and the clock showed that there were 6 seconds to the end. When everything seemed really bad, a miracle happened. Koç missed the foul shots and when Bilkent’s No:14 (Can) took the ball and rushed for the score, they committed a foul. He scored the two and so the game ended Bilkent 57 - Koç 56.
The crucial mistake at the very end of the game compensated for the rather insufficient effort brought forth by the Bilkent team and we won the match after all. Nevertheless, congratulations to all our players.

BÝLKENT VERSUS SABANCI:
Ayva Cup continued on Sunday at the Main Campus Sports Hall as the Bilkent Men’s and Women’s teams played against the Sabancý teams. The women’s teams were first on the court and it was the Bilkent side who scored the first points.
However, the opening period ended with Bilkent down, 10-15 as our team could not take advantage of their numerous opportunities. The second period started with Bilkent Women’s strong offense and the score reflected the good performance, as our team was only one point behind at half time (22-23). Unfortunately, Sabancý got control of the game in the third quarter as they extended their lead to 8 points before the final period (32-40). Just like the beginning of the second period, the Bilkent women’s team started scoring continuously not even letting the other side score once. So it was again down to 1 point when the referee decided on a technical foul. The decision seemed to deflate Bilkent and the game ended with the win going to Sabancý by the score of 60-50.
Basketball excitement continued with the Men’s game right after the Women’s game. The Sabancý Men’s outstanding performance at both defensive and offensive rebounds led to an 11-15 lead in the opening period. However, tactics given throughout the break and the continuous substitutions worked and Bilkent took the lead quite easily as their fast breaks resulted with consecutive points (40-32). The second half started and the Bilkent fans witnessed a more aggressive and ambitious team, as the difference in the score reached 17 points by the end of third period (65-48). The final quarter of the game was entertaining in a sense that the Bilkent Men’s Team cruised to a 79-70 victory.

BÝLKENT VERSUS METU:
The Men’s game was pretty exciting. In the beginning of the first period Bilkent dominated the game with an eight to nothing run. However, after a few minutes the teams got square and
Bilkent began to have a hard time scoring. Consequently, the first period ended 16 to 10 in our favor. The beginning of the second period was not so good for Bilkent offensively. METU had some good shots and they scored one after another, as they went ahead by a score of 17-16. Nearing the end of the second period, the leading performance of No:14 (Can) let Bilkent catch up with METU so the second period ended with a head to head 27 to 26 score line. In the third period, METU chose some good and clear shots while the scorers for Bilkent couldn’t organize their offense. At the end of the third period; METU 42- Bilkent 36.
In the last and most exciting period, Bilkent had difficulty finding good shots and METU went ahead 51-36. Then, Bilkent took control of the situation and showed their skills on the court, so METU was forced to commit fouls to maintain the score. By the end of the match, Bilkent brought the score up to 53-46 but then they couldn’t find the basket, missing several three-point attempts and METU took advantage of the situation and the game ended 58 to 47. The leading scorers of our team were Can-no:14 and No:15 (Esef) with 13 points each.
METU dominated the women’s game winning by a score of 64 to 37.
The next scheduled games are tomorrow (Wednesday, December 17) and we invite all Bilkent students to support our teams against Hacettepe University.
