A Melodious Contribution to Bilkent Culture

An amateur chorus on its way to becoming a significant cultural asset for Bilkent, the Classical Turkish Music Society is planning several public concerts, including one for May Fest. The Society has been active since 1998 under the directorship of Dr. Ümit Özger.
Classical Turkish music was among the highest cultural achievements of Ottoman society for many centuries. Drawing upon a solid musical tradition distinct from folk music and other forms of Western music, it is still alive, popular, and resonant among the Turkish people. Members of the Society get together in an atmosphere of learning, entertainment, and jovial friendship. The Society is unique in that, although it is mainly for students, Bilkent Administrators and academicians take part in it too.
Meetings of the Society are held weekly on Thursday between 6 and 8 p.m. at the Student Union Building, Video Room. Come join the Society with your instrument, voice, or just for the fun of it, as a listener and a participant. For further information, contact Dr. Ümit Özger at ext.1882 (kumit@bilkent.edu/tr).
