The Streets of Ankara

Gandhi's name is belongs to a street in Ankara, parallel to Köroğlu. But instead of his real name, he is generally known as 'Mahatma' (Great Soul), so we call our street Mahatma Gandhi.
Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi (Mahatma Gandhi) (1869-1948)
An Indian nationalist leader and social reformer. He spent several years in South Africa opposing laws that discriminated against Indians, and on his return to India during WWI started a campaign to raise the economic and social standards of its people.
As leader of the Indian National Congress, Gandhi adopted a policy of civil disobedience, supported by hunger strikes directed against British rule in India. He spent several years in prison, but lived to see independence achieved (1947). Having opposed violence all his life, he was assassinated by a Hindu fanatic opposed to his efforts to achieve communal harmony between Hindus and Muslims. (Collins Gem, Modern History Basic Facts)

Hande Kaya (IR/III)
