A fourth year exchange student from the Interior Architecture and Environmental Design Department, Ahmet Hakan Yürüoğlu, received a first place award for design students in California. The competition, sponsored by the Construction Specifications Institute and the American Society of Interior Designers, asked students from California State Universities at Chico and Sacramento, the American River College, UC Davis, and other college campuses to design a new entry for the Signature Reprographics building in Sacramento.
Student teams worked on their entries inside the building for which the new entry was being designed. The winning design was awarded to the team led by University of UCD's Ahmet Hakan Yürüoğlu; fellow students Pin Li and May Wongs’ team took second place, and Kristin Riccio and Cynthia Rued’s team took the third place award.
