Mohammed Ali Jinnah (Cinnah) (1876-1948)
A Pakistani politician, Jinnah joined the Indian national Congress, the Indian Muslim League and Viceroy's Legislative Council before WWI. He resigned from Congress because of his dislike of Ghandi's disobedience campaign and the Hindu domination of the independence movement.
He was president of the Muslim League from 1934 onwards. He gave support to the UK during WWII when Congress refused to do so and from 1940 was a leading supporter of the
partition of the subcontinent into
separate Hindu and Muslim states. When this happened, in 1947, he became his country's first Governor General, having to cope with problems focusing on regional fighting, rioting and refugees, and the difficult relationship with India. (Collins Gem, Modern History Basic Facts)
