Film Review: Swimming Pool

A successful English writer, a vacation in a little piece of heaven, and an attractive girl. When these three come together, you will find yourself transported to a mysterious place in time. What I am talking about is another gift to movie addicts from François Ozon, a well-known, creative French director. In his latest movie, “Swimming Pool”, Ozon shows how talented he is by giving a completely new experience to the audience through his riveting style. The lead actress, Charlotte Rampling, does a fantastic job characterizing Sarah Morton, who plays a successful English detective writer in the movie.
After recognizing that her fame is diminishing, Sarah takes a vacation at her editor’s house in France, in order to relax and continue writing her current novel. Unfortunately, her peaceful holiday is ruined by her editor’s daughter, Julie (performed by Ludivine Sagnier), who has also come to the house for her vacation. Although Sarah believes that Julie's visit will devastate her plans, later on Julie turns out to be a wonderful inspiration for an unexpected novel. As a new fan of Ozon, I can definitely say he did a good job focusing on character analysis and the interaction of these characters with each other. Both Charlotte Rampling and Ludivine Sagnier are perfect choices for their characters in the film, giving mind-blowing performances. Their performances are so realistic, you forget all about the problems in your life and focus solely on the screen. There are several scenes having sexual content, during which some of you might feel uncomfortable, but the music, environment, and fluency of expression are all amazing and make you look at the movie as a whole rather than scene by scene.
The surprising end of the movie will make you feel as if you ran head first into a wall. I strongly recommend that everyone should take time out of their busy schedules to watch this European film as soon as possible. The film is currently showing at Kızılırmak and Odeon movie theatres.
