Introduction to Psychology is a new course being offered this
semester. Any student may take it as an elective. The course is a general introduction to
the study of mind and behavior. It introduces the student to questions like how the mind
works and how it develops, why people act and feel the way they do, and how they interact
with the environment; and summarizes some of the major findings which provide possible
explanations. In the process, the ways in which psychological scientists carry out their
research, such as experimental, physiological, neuroscience and survey methods, are
introduced. Topics covered include the biological and evolutionary bases of psychology,
perception, memory, thinking and reasoning, language, cognitive and social development,
motivation, social behaviour, personality, intelligence, disorders and therapy.
