Pilates for Strength and Balance

The Physical Education and Sports Center has launched a series of exercise classes, supervised by instructor Filiz Gür. These classes provide participants with an opportunity to become more active in a safe, effective and enjoyable way. One of the courses being offered is Pilates. What is Pilates?

Pilates is a method of exercise and physical movement designed to stretch, strengthen and balance the body. Involving the systematic practice of specific exercises coupled with focused breathing patterns, Pilates has proven itself invaluable both as a fitness endeavor in and of itself, and also as an important adjunct to professional sports training and physical rehabilitation of all kinds.
Practiced faithfully, Pilates yields numerous benefits. Increased lung capacity and circulation through deep, healthy breathing is a primary focus. Strength and flexibility, particularly of the abdomen and back muscles, and coordination, both muscular and mental, are key components in an effective Pilates program. Posture, balance and core strength are all increased. Bone density and joint health improve, and many individuals experience positive body awareness for the first time.
Gür says, “We’re very lucky at Bilkent because we can keep up with the latest information, bring it here, and incorporate it into what we offer. Aerobics and step classes provide the basics of a healthy life, and they're also fun. They aim to improve the cardio and circulation systems and muscle firmness and power, and to reduce fat percentage and physical and mental stress. As for Pilates, it teaches balance and control of the body, and that capacity spills over into other areas of life. Just try it and see!”
