In addition to the projects featured in previous issues of the Bilkent
News, TDP (Toplumsal Duyarlılık Projeleri) is helping to organize
members of the Bilkent community in still more volunteer activities around Ankara. One of
them involves 11th- and 12th-grade students from the Bilkent University Preparatory School
/ Bilkent International School (BUPS/BIS). As a requirement for graduation, BUPS/BIS
students participate in a program called CAS: Creativity, Action and Service. This
semester, in connection with TDP, they are volunteering for GEP (Gönüllü
Eğitim Projesi) at the Hasan Tahsin İlköğretim Okulu on Saturdays.
TDP is also looking for new volunteers for another project, Yetiştirme
Yurtları Projesi (YYP).
At the Sincan Yetiştirme Yurdu, there are 90 children, who are divided into six
groups. Each group has children of various ages, mostly between 9 and 12 years old. Every
Saturday, 15 volunteers from Bilkent go there to work with the children.
As a new volunteer, you might go with a question in mind: "What can I do to make
these children happy?" However, you soon realize that they have many abilities to
show you, such as doing capoeira or role plays. Visits by students from our university are
really special for them, because they feel lonely and have many questions about the
future.
This worthwhile project needs new volunteers and new ideas. If you would like to
participate, please contact Aslı Çıtak at acitak@ug.bilkent.edu.tr
