Ken-Do Comes to Bilkent

A new Bilkent student club, Ken-Do Kulübü, is the second dojo society to be founded at a university in Turkey. Bilkent's Ken-Do Club has grown quickly and already has 98 members. The name of this relatively new martial arts sport comes from the words for sword (ken) and path or doctrine (do).
Bilkent Ken-Do Kulübü founder Görkem Taş (ECON/II) gave Bilkent News the following information about ken-do:
"A martial art is a particular system of combat. Ken-do is a kind of martial art with athletic techniques. It has been developing since 1975, and we expect it will soon become widespread at universities in Turkey. The aim of this sport is to defend oneself or defeat one's opponent with the help of a sword constructed of four bamboo sticks (shinai)."

Here is a complete list of ken-do equipment.
For beginners, only the sword is necessary.
-Bamboo sword (Shinai)
-Culottes (Ken-do hakama)
-Protective armour (Bogu)
-Protective mask (Men)
-Hand protector (Kote)
-Groin and leg protector (Tare)
-Stomach protector (Do)
-Ken-do jacket/uniform
The Physical Education and Sports Center is offering a ken-do course which begins this week. It will be held every Saturday from 9:30 a.m. to noon at the Student Dormitories Sports Hall. For now, the course will be taught by Asst. Prof. Ayşe Nur Tekmen. In the coming weeks, a world-class teacher from Japan, Mitsunor Matsumara (7th Dan), will take over the course. Those who want to participate can come to the classes or call ext. 1993 for information.
There is a Bilkent ken-do groups list, kendobilkent@yahoogroups.com. If you would like to know more about ken-do, you can visit the website
