“Takim Böyle Tutulur” Documents Football Fans’ Devotion

How did the idea for this film come up?
I've known Okan Altınparmak (the movie's other director) for two years. We wanted to do something together, and decided to make an independent film about football fans. Okan's father used to play for Fenerbahçe.

Is there any point that you wanted to highlight in the film?
We wanted viewers to feel the passion for football by putting themselves in the position of football fans. Sometimes weget very close to the characters, and sometimes we step back from them. This is a documentary, so we show people's genuine emotions. But of course we don't go beyond a certain limit--we respect their private lives.

Why Fenerbahçe?
As I mentioned, this was due to Okan's background. I actually support Beşiktaş. Our co-producer, Serdar Aksoy, is a Galatasaray fan, and many people on the film set supported different teams. It's not that important. This movie is not only about Fenerbahçe fans. The fans in our film could represent any or all football fans.

What kind of reaction do you think you'll get from fans of other teams?
Well, some won't want to watch it, and some may watch it because they wonder if something negative is said about their favorite team. But a friend of mine who supports Beşiktaş says he liked the film.

How do you think the negative events that took place after the Turkey-Sweden match will affect the way people react to this movie? Will it attract more interest in your film, since football is being talked about
so much right now?

What happened in the Turkey-Sweden match was a big shock. I don’t know if it will affect us positively or negatively. We made a documentary that showed both the good and bad sides of the subject in general. However, we didn't include any violence, nor did we show the other teams in a bad light.

Was it difficult to make a movie while continuing your academic work at Bilkent?
Teaching for five days and then shooting a film on top of that was quite difficult. I also spent my whole summer working on the film. But, Bilkent University and my students supported me all the way. It's very important for me to be at Bilkent and to teach here.

Were any Bilkent students involved in making the movie?
During the shooting of the film in Istanbul, students came to visit me. They helped me a great deal. Also, the post production of the movie was done in the Bilkent Communication and Design studios. It was an excellent opportunity for the students to see a professional film montage here in their own studios.

Is there anything you want to add?
This film is different, it's not an ordinary documentary. It tries to involve you, to put you right next to the fans, or even in their position.
