Bilkent Debate Team Wins at Niğde, Goes on to Quarterfinals

The Bilkent University Debate Team, part of the Management and Economy Community (MEC), participated in the "Nigde University Debating Championship," which took place November 10-13.

The Bilkent A team--Cüneyt Unar (POLS) and Yasemin Satır (ECON)--and the Bilkent B team--Yiğit Engin (ECON) and Cangül Telefoncu (ECON)--competed in the tournament, while Çağlar Kurc (IR) served on the adjudication panel.

The Bilkent A team won the tournament, giving it the right to go on to
the quarterfinals, while the B team took second place.

 

Nanotechnology Club Set Up

A new student organization, the Bilkent Nanotechnology Club, aims to make people more familiar with this important area. The university's Nanotechnology Research Center, NANOTAM, has given support during the process of establishing the club, and the Center's director, Prof. Ekmel Özbay, and associate director, Asst. Prof. Hilmi Volkan Demir, serve as the club's advisors.

The club has already organized its first seminar, at which Prof. Özbay talked about the areas in which nanotechnology can be used, and what is to be expected in the future. On Monday, December 12, NanoFotonik'05 will take place at FADA, FFB-05 and FFB-22. Human Rights Day at Bilkent

The Bilkent University Human Rights and EU Club, established by a group of enthusiastic Bilkent undergraduates in 2003, will celebrate its second birthday on Saturday, December 10, Human Rights Day, by broadcasting the documentary film "Önce İnsan!" directed by the acclaimed journalist Can Dündar. Preceding this, five short thematic films on "Multiple Identities /Multiculturalism," "Women's Rights," "Children's Rights," "Environment and Cultural Heritage" and "Dignified Life" plus an introductory vignette highlighting the messages of "Önce İnsan!" will be shown.

The one-hour documentary itself covers a wide range of topics including civil sensitivity, minority rights, subcultures in Turkish society, the state attitude towards NGOs, and other human rights issues in Turkey. "Önce İnsan!" is a story of the civil awakening in this country.

The film will be broadcast (in Turkish and without subtitles) at FADA, FFB-05, at 4 p.m.
