Dr. Phyllis Erdoğan
Bilkent Vice President
After 20 years of service
as University Librarian, Dr. Phyllis Erdoğan will leave that position on
January 3, 2006, to focus on her work with Bilkent's founder and
president, Dr. İhsan Doğramacı. Barbara von Wahlde, Vice President for
Libraries at SUNY-Buffalo, will serve as Interim Director of the Bilkent
University Library.
Dr. Erdoğan, a Bilkent
Vice President, recalled how the library had its meager beginnings in
one of the buildings now housing faculty. Today, the library's Main
Campus building is a Bilkent landmark, and there are library premises on
the East Campus as well. (Continued)

Research By Bilkent Faculty
Members, Alumni Featured on the Cover of "Physical Review Letters"
Bilkent
University takes pride in its participation in world-class research. The
quality of Bilkent research was validated further when two articles
written by Bilkent faculty members and alumni were featured on the cover
of "Physical Review Letters" this year. "Physical Review Letters" is a
very prestigious physics journal and has a wide impact on science and
technology.
The first paper, entitled "Photonic
Band Gap via Quantum Coherence in Vortex Lattices of Bose-Einstein
Condensates," was written by Assistant Professor M. Özgür Oktel of the
Department of Physics, in collaboration with Assistant Professor Özgür
E. Müstecaplıoğlu of Koç University. Dr. Müstecaplıoğlu received both
his undergraduate degree and his Ph.D. from Bilkent.
In another issue, "Physical
Review Letters" selected the work of two Bilkent University alumni to
feature on its cover. Nuri Öncel, Oğuzhan Gürlü and their collaborators
at the University of Twente realized detection of quantum confined
electron states between stable platinum nanowires self-organized on a
germanium surface.
