Research By Bilkent Faculty Members, Alumni Featured on the Cover of "Physical Review Letters"

Bilkent University takes pride in its participation in world-class research. The quality of Bilkent research was validated further when two articles written by Bilkent faculty members and alumni were featured on the cover of "Physical Review Letters" this year. "Physical Review Letters" is a very prestigious physics journal and has a wide impact on science and technology.

The first paper, entitled "Photonic Band Gap via Quantum Coherence in Vortex Lattices of Bose-Einstein Condensates," was written by Assistant Professor M. Özgür Oktel of the Department of Physics, in collaboration with Assistant Professor Özgür E. Müstecaplıoğlu of Koç University. Dr. Müstecaplıoğlu received both his undergraduate degree and his Ph.D. from Bilkent.

In another issue, "Physical Review Letters" selected the work of two Bilkent University alumni to feature on its cover. Nuri Öncel, Oğuzhan Gürlü and their collaborators at the University of Twente realized detection of quantum confined electron states between stable platinum nanowires self-organized on a germanium surface.
