The team’s name, EXEL
stands for "extending electromagnetism through novel artificial
materials." All known materials are "right-handed," in other words, they
have a positive index of refraction. The materials developed by the team
are called Left-Handed Materials (LHMs) or Negative Index Materials (NIMs),
and are able to overturn various familiar properties of light. Potential
applications of the team’s research work include improvements in
magnetic resonance imaging and cellular
communications.
The 2005 Descartes
Prizes were presented by the EU Commissioner for Science and Research,
Janez Potocnik, at a ceremony that took place at the Royal Society in
London on December 2.
