During her tenure, the
collection has grown to encompass 442,000 volumes (books and bound
journals); electronic access to more than 32,000 journals; over 100,000
microforms; and, 44,000 non-book materials including sheet music, sound
recordings, video- and audiocassettes, DVDs and VCDs. The library also
houses a Turkish Plastic Arts Archive and an art gallery where showings
of works by some of Turkey's leading artists as well as Bilkent students
and staff are held.
Bilkent's library has
played a leading role in a number of areas. It was the first Turkish
university library to automate its catalog and circulation services; the
first to establish mutual lending rights for faculty members of other
Ankara universities; and, is perhaps still the only major Turkish
university library with an open-door policy. That policy also extends to
use of its facilities for listening to music, reading
and printing microforms and watching videos, DVDs and VCDs.
The Bilkent community,
as well as the library's many external users, will remember Dr.
Erdođan’s contributions with gratitude for decades to come.
