Wired magazine's editor
and visionary Kevin Kelly rekindled an old but vitally important debate
in his entry to edge.org's World Question 2006. The dangerous idea in
question here, rampant among Internet users, is that more anonymity is
good. Privacy advocates see anonymity as a means to curtail intrusive
business practices. And, in the post 9/11 world, many see anonymous
communications as their only protection against increasingly nervous
governments. Some even go so far as to suggest it be considered a
fundamental human right. What do you think?
Interested individuals
from all disciplines are invited to debate this issue and help develop a
deeper understanding of privacy, anonymity and accountability in the
information age at a meeting to be held on Tuesday, March
14 at 5:40 p.m. in room EA-409. Background information can
