A FRIDAY AT BİLKENT
From my childhood right up to now, my
favorite day of the week has always been Friday. Even if I have lots of
things to do the next day, Friday is still the best. My favorite TV
shows, as well as cinema premieres, are always on Fridays. Fridays are
the days for you to choose what you
want to do. You can go out to chill, or you can relax at home in your
slippers and pajamas just watching TV.
Friday always has different opportunities,
because everybody needs to relax and get rid of weekday stress. Here at
Bilkent, there are some really good ways to have an enjoyable Friday.
Let's say that your classes finished up at 4:30. You're starving, you
don't have any plans and you don't feel like going in to town.
Well, first you can have something to eat
at the Marmara Tabldot Restaurant. But you should hurry, because the
Music Club organizes concerts there after 5 p.m. Get ready for a shock--you're
not alone. There's a whole roomful of rock music lovers, and the bands
that show up there are really good. The Marmara isn't like the same old
Marmara Restaurant you know. It's become a pub where really good live
music is played and beer is sold.
The concert will take about two hours, and
then you'll have to rush off again, because the Performing Arts
Department students are putting on a play in the FMPA Building. This
month, Nazım Hikmet`s "Var mı Olmak? Yok mu Olmak?" is on stage. For an
enjoyable cultural activity on Friday, theater is a great choice. For me,
the real actors and actresses are the ones who perform live on the stage,
and theater is quite another thing from the cinema. Even if a script is
terrible, it's exciting to see a live performance. Also, the Bilkent
Performing Arts Department is really good. In fact, Bilkent Performing
Arts graduates appear in many TV series and films. So, on a Friday night,
you can watch people who may be on TV or in the movies some day.
As far as the play itself, I loved seeing a
Turkish play on stage for a change instead of Shakespeare, even with the
Ankara “misket” added! The way that the performers
act in this play is so natural. Sometimes I couldn't even decide whether
what was happening on stage was real or not. So, I congratulate the
young actors and actresses. I am sure that this experience will be of
great help in their careers. If there was one thing I didn't like, it
was the smoking thing. I don't like the idea of showing that people are
feeling sorrow or anger by having them light up a cigarette. This is
really encouraging people to smoke, in a way.
Anyway, there's a great play that you can
see at the FMPA Building, and an excellent rock concert that you can
listen to at the Marmara Restaurant.
Enjoy Fridays at Bilkent!
