On Saturday, April 8, the inaugural “Atatürk Cup” was contested between the Capital Stars (Başkent Yıldızları) and the Anka women's ice hockey teams at Belpa Ice Rink in Bahçelievler. After three periods of play, Başkent was the victor, winning the match 12-5. Four Bilkent students were on the Başkent team: Esra Doğramacı (Captain) MIAPP/II, Elif Nalçakan (IR/IV), Nilay Özgürler (TRIN/IV) and former student Aslı Çukurkavaklı (THM). Captain Esra Doğramacı scored 3 goals and had 2 assists.
The Başkent team, established this season, has become the largest women's ice hockey team/program in Turkey. The team is made up primarily of university students, and includes members from Hacettepe, Gazi and Ankara Universities as well as Başkent and Bilkent.
The Başkent team is coached by Göktürk Taşdemir, a graduate of Ankara University's Physical Education program and a member of the Turkish national men's ice hockey team. You can catch the girls (and guys) at practice most days of the week. We'd like to extend a big thank you to all the Bilkent supporters who spotted the flyers around campus and were able to attend the Atatürk Cup Game.
