Hilmi Yavuz, the prominent poet and literary critic and a member of the faculty of the Department of Turkish Literature, turned 70 on April 14, 2006. The occasion has been celebrated with various activities, such as symposia and concerts, in a number of places in Turkey. These included panels at the Sakarya Municipality on December 3 and 4, 2005; an evening program in Siirt where the opening speech was given by Siirt Governor Hüseyin Avni Mutlu; and a symposium/concert organized by the Beykoz Municipality at İstanbul's Cemal Reşit Rey Auditorium on March 26, 2006. On April 15, the Trabzon Municipality organized a one-day event entitled "Tribute to Hilmi Yavuz." The Hilmi Yavuz birthday tributes will continue with symposia in Antalya on May 7 and Mersin on May 27.
In addition, on the occasion of his landmark year, Yapı Kredi Yayınları has published his "Toplu Şiirler (Complete Poems), 1969-2005." Dozens of articles on Hilmi Yavuz have appeared in newspapers, book supplements and literary magazines this March
and April.
