President Demirel then spoke specifically about leadership. He defined it as “the capacity and art of administering, directing, encouraging, convincing, influencing and persuading.” He stated that a leader must have intellectual integrity, experience and a record of success, and should continually engage in the processes of questioning, scientific reasoning and analyzing.
The engineer and former president also had some practical advice to share with his listeners.
He recommended that they use time efficiently, down to the last minutes and seconds. He firmly ruled out “hesitation,” saying that good leaders never hesitate. He advised everyone to not only consider themselves, but to give due importance to the team and the task at hand.
During the question and answer session, audience members asked President Demirel about a wide range of topics, including his political career, personal achievements and family and social relationships.
