New Student Council Election System

New bylaws adopted by the Interuniversity Council to govern student representation as well as the structure and organization of student councils in all universities in Turkey were published in the Official Gazette on September 20, 2005.

The Bilkent University Senate then passed its own new “Student Council Regulations” (Öğrenci Konseyi Yönergesi) to conform with the bylaws on October 7, 2005.
Accordingly, student elections for the 2005-2006 academic year will take place under a new election system in October-November 2005.

In this year's elections, students in each department, including those in the preparatory school, will elect one student as the department representative for each of the university's two- or four-year departments. In addition, students in each department of an institute will elect their own representative.

In this stage of the elections, all students registered as of October 17, 2005, who are in attendance will vote electronically using designated computers to elect their representatives.

The department representatives of a faculty or school will elect from among themselves the representative for their faculty/school. The department representatives of an institute will likewise elect from among themselves an institute representative.

Since there will be 14 faculty/school representatives and 6 institute representatives, a total of 20 student representatives will now form the University Student Council. The Council will elect its Executive Committee, President and a three-member Board of Controllers.
