Faces on Campus: Password Master

We students always have problems with passwords and computers. Most students drop by Batur Orkun's office at least once during the semester. It may not be exactly correct to call him the "Password Master," since he's the one who gives students their passwords.

During his six years at Bilkent University, he's done a lot for both students and faculty members. He has contributed to many programs such as BAIS, STARS and SAPS. Also, he's the one who presents “points for activities” during the orientation program.

Since the day he first began working at Bilkent, he has had to face unrelated issues. Many students drop by his office to talk about such problems. He said that not only students, but also parents come to his office.

For instance, a few years ago, after grades were submitted, a student came and asked him if someone--specifically, her parents--could learn her BAIS password. Two days later, a mother came to ask for her daughter's grade. First, he told her that it wasn't possible. While suggesting that she talk to her daughter, he asked without meaning to if she was the mother of such and such a student. The woman began to be suspicious, because she hadn't said her daughter's name. But somehow he managed to make everything ok, without giving away the fact that the student had come to him.

These are the kinds of things Batur Orkun has to deal with in the course of his job. He's also a master's student at Ankara University. Since he's able to work here at the same time as he's studying for an advanced degree, he's very happy with his situation and hopes to stay at Bilkent during the coming years.
