GBP Volunteers Participate in
Nationwide Program
Genç Bakış Projesi (GBP),
one of the projects of the Bilkent Toplum Duyarlılık Projeleri/Toplum
Gönüllüleri Vakfı (TDP/TOG) group, is contributing to a nationwide
program that aims to acquaint primary and high school students with the
concept of volunteerism.
Last year, TOG, a non-governmental organization based on the volunteer
activities of university students, signed a protocol with the Ministry
of Education (MEB), which is intended to increase awareness of volunteer
work among students in primary and high schools by involving them in
volunteer projects. This will help them to develop a sense of social
responsibility, enable them to take part in solving social problems
within the local region of their schools and emphasize to them the
importance of civil society.

Republic Run 2005 Results
On Saturday, October 22, at 11 a.m.,
Bilkenters of all ages--runners, joggers and walkers--gathered outside
the East Campus Sports Hall for a run celebrating the 82nd anniversary
of the Republic of Turkey. The participants ran a 5-km course from the
East Campus to the Main Campus. An awards ceremony then took place in
the Main Campus Sports Hall, at which the winners received trophies.
This
year's run had a special feature. As part of the Üniversite Halk
Buluşması (University-Community Relations) project, Çubuk Lisesi was
invited to participate in the run as a "guest school."

Nanotransistors, Nanolasers and More: Bilkent Researchers Investigate
New Technologies
"Nano" means dwarf in the
Greek language. Today, it is used to designate a specific unit of
measurement: a nanometer is one-thousandth of a millimeter. To give an
idea of how small that is, only three atoms can fit into a nanometer.
The term is also used in words like nanoscience and nanotechnology,
which are fields that involve studying and working with matter on an
atomic scale.
Cutting-edge
research work is currently in progress at Bilkent's Nanotechnology
Research Center (NANOTAM), established three years ago. The center is
dedicated to research in experimental nanoscience and nanotechnology,
with a strong emphasis on education and training. NANOTAM is directed by
Prof. Ekmel Özbay. The center's associate director is Asst. Prof. Hilmi
Volkan Demir. and, Asst. Prof. Özgür Aktaş works as a faculty member in
the center. (Continued)
