He
rose from a humble background as a member of India's lowest caste to the
highest office in the country, the presidency. In terms of Gandhi's
ideal of ridding his nation of its discriminatory and ancient caste
system, the life of K.R. Narayanan may be considered as a most
significant affirmation of India's democracy.
Prior
to assuming the presidency in 1997, he had a long and remarkable career,
serving as ambassador to Ankara, Beijing and Washington D.C., as well as
in several cabinet posts. He was also the vice-chancellor of Jawaharlal
Nehru University.
President Narayanan's life was a testimony to the battle against poverty
and societal barriers. He will be remembered by us all.
