Craig R. Barrett Receives Honorary Doctorate

On Monday, November 14, Bilkent University conferred an honorary
doctorate upon Craig R. Barrett, the Chairman of the Board of Intel
Corporation, at a ceremony that took place at the Bilkent Concert Hall.

Dr. Barrett, who holds a Ph.D. in Materials Science from Stanford
University, joined Intel Corporation in 1974 as a technology development
manager. He rose through the company's executive ranks and became Intel's fourth president in 1997, its chief executive officer in 1998 and
chairman of the board in May 2005. (Continued)
 

Elect Your Department Representative

Next week an important event on the Bilkent calendar will take place:
elections for Department Representatives. Eligible students are strongly encouraged to vote. Voting will be done electronically. The names of
the candidates and eligible voters are posted at www.bilkent.edu.tr/konsey

The first round of elections will be on Tuesday, November 22 from 9:30
a.m. - 5 p.m. If the voter turnout is below 80% for a particular
department, the election process for that department will continue with a
second round of voting on Wednesday, November 23. (Continued)
 

Ceremony Marks November 10 at Bilkent

On Thursday, November 10, the 67th anniversary of the death of Turkey's
beloved Atatürk, a commemorative program was held on campus. The
program began at the Bilkent Atatürk Monument with a moment of silence, and continued with a solo violoncello performance by Hayrettin Hoca at the
Mithat Çoruh Auditorium, following the national anthem. A presentation
by Prof. Metin Heper, "Atatürk'ü Nasıl Anmak" ("Ways to Commemorate
Atatürk"), focusing on how his ideas should affect today, completed the
program.

Economist B. B. Bhattacharya Gives Seminar at Bilkent

Last week Prof. B. B. Bhattacharya, Vice-Chancellor of Jawaharlal Nehru University
in New Delhi, visited Turkey for the first
time and gave a seminar at Bilkent on November 7.

Prof. Bhattacharya received his Ph.D. in economics from the Delhi School of Economics at the University of Delhi in 1971. He has published 9 books and more than 100 papers in national and international journals, and is a leading expert in econometric modeling and forecasting. (Continued)

K.R. Narayanan, Recipient of Bilkent Honorary Doctorate, Passes Away

K.R. Narayanan, India's 10th President, died last week in New Delhi,
due to pneumonia and kidney failure, at the age of 85.

President Narayanan, a recipient of an honorary doctorate from Bilkent,
was last on our campus this past summer, to participate in the 2005
sessions of the Parliament of Cultures (an ongoing initiative to foster
better understanding among cultures and enhance dialogue among thinkers
and intellectuals worldwide). (Continued)

Bilkent Mourns Economics Students

On Thursday, November 10, Bilkent lost two of its students, Ali Çağatay
Mirahur (ECON/III) and Orhan Öz (ECON/III), in a traffic accident that
took place in Yeniçağ, Bolu.
We would like to extend our sincerest condolences to their families and
friends.
