Being considered the most credible awards ceremony in the recording
industry, the Grammy Awards were handed out for the 49th time on February 11 in Los
Angeles. The show included performances by The Police, Justin Timberlake, the Red Hot
Chilli Pepers, Beyoncé and many other artists.
The country music trio, the Dixie Chicks were the big winners of the night since they took
home all five awards they were nominated for including Best Album of the Year for Taking
The Long Way and Record and Song of the Year awards for "Not Ready To Make
Nice." The group was almost banned from country radios not so long ago when the lead
singer publicly criticized president George W. Bush over his strategy in Iraq. This
controversy was considered to be the end of their career but the recording academy
supported the band and showed that their music is what actually counts.
The other winner of the night was Mary J. Blige with three awards who was nominated eight
times - the most for any artist this year. The R&B singer won her Grammys in the
R&B categories as the incident reminded minds of last year, when Mariah Carey was also
nominated for eight awards but took home three. Blige's "Be Without You"
garnered her the Best R&B Female Vocal Performance award, which was predicted as the
song is a direct replica of last year's winner, Carey's "We Belong Together."
Justin Timberlake, Gnarls Barkley and the Red Hot Chilli Peppers were among those who were
also winners of multiple awards. Carrie Underwood, winner of the last season of American
Idol, was named the Best New Artist and also won the award for Best Female Country Vocal
Performance.
As usual, the highlights of the predictable awards ceremony were the performances. The
Police reunited for this one night performing their classic hit "Roxanne," while
Justin Timberlake gave a great performance of his latest hit "What Goes Around Comes
Around."
