Long-Time Head of
International Relations Department to Step Down as Chair |
Prof. Dr. Ali Karaosmanošlu, who assumed the chairmanship of the Bilkent
University Department of International Relations shortly after its foundation, has decided
after nearly 20 years of leading the department to step down from his position as Chair
and to stay on as a member of the IR faculty. In addition to his long-time leadership
position at Bilkent University and his invaluable efforts in the building of the Bilkent
IR department, Dr. Karaosmanošlu is widely recognized as an icon of the Turkish
International Relations community. Specializing in areas of strategic studies, foreign
policy and public international law, the excellence of his scholarly work and his
contributions to the local discipline provide inspiration to his students and colleagues
alike. Under Dr. Karaosmanošlu's leadership, the Bilkent University Department of
International Relations has continually grown in size and stature. With the diverse
faculty, research orientations, and multiple tracks of studies that Dr. Karaosmanošlu has
established, the department proudly claims its position as the best-known and most
respected Turkish IR department both nationally and internationally.
Dr. Karaosmanošlu earned his Ph.D. in Law at the University of Lausanne. He has taught at
both Middle East Technical and Bosphorous universities, held visiting positions at
Stanford and Princeton, fellowships with Fulbright, NATO, and The Hague Academy of
International Law, and has been a member of Turkish Delegations to various
intergovernmental conferences, including the Conference on Security and Cooperation in
Europe and the UN Conference on the
Law of the Sea. He is the author and editor of several books, including Les actions
militaires coercitive et non coercitive des Nations Unies (Genéve: Droz, 1970) -
awarded the Foundation Fleuret prize (1971) and The Europeanization of Turkey's
Security Policy (Ankara: Foreign Policy Institute, 2004), and has published in such
journals as Foreign Affairs, Europa Archiv, Politique Etrangčre, Security Dialogue,
International Defense Review, and Journal of International Affairs.
The students, faculty members, and administrative staff of the Department of International
Relations would like to express their gratitude to Dr. Karaosmanošlu for his years of
guidance and leadership, and look forward to a long future of continuing to benefit from
his scholarly insights, practical experience, and vision. Dr. Karaosmanošlu looks forward
to now having time to dedicate himself fully to his research and publishing activities.
Dr. Karaosmanošlu will be succeeded as department Chair by Associate Professor Dr. Ersel
Aydżnlż. Dr. Aydżnlż completed his doctoral studies at McGill University (2002), and
was a post-doctoral fellow at Harvard University's Kennedy School of Government
(2004-2005). He has previously taught at McGill, Middle East Technical and George
Washington Universities.
He has published various works on the topics of globalization and security, international
relations theory, and Turkish politics.
