Maestro Ashkenazy at Bilkent
Vladimir Ashkenazy is perhaps one of the most renowned and inspiring conductors of our
time, and the Bilkent Symphony Orchestra will have the honor of being conducted by him on
May 19. Accompanied by Gülsin Onay, Rahmaninof's Concerto No. 3 in D minor, Op. 30 and
Prokofiev's Symphony No. 5 in B-flat major, Op. 100 will be performed.
Russian born Vladimir Ashkenazy began his music career playing the piano, and moved on to
conducting in 1973 after moving to Iceland. He has many awards and recognitions, including
a number of Grammy awards. This is Ashkenazy's first time performing in Ankara.
The concert will be held on Saturday, May 19 at 7 p.m. at the Bilkent
Concert Hall. Tickets can be purchased at the Concert Hall, Dost Kitapevi (Kızılay,
Kavaklıdere, Ankuva), Beymen (Arjantin street), and Diapason (Kavaklıdere). There will
be free buses an hour before the show from Tunus and Sıhhiye. For more information, you

Cevdet Kudret Book
Donation and Panel
Cevdet Kudret
(Solok), the prominent author and scholar of Turkish literature, was born in 1907 and died
in 1992. His family has donated his book collection through the Center for Turkish
Literature to the Bilkent Library. On the occasion of the official acquisition of the
collection, Bilkent will hold a ceremony and organize a panel discussion on Tuesday,
May 22, 2007. The ceremony at the library will start at 5 p.m.
with a tribute by Rector Prof. Ali Doğramacı and a speech by Dr. David Thornton,
Director of Bilkent Library. On behalf of Cevdet Kudret's family, his daughter Ayşe
Kudret will deliver a brief address after which a plaque acknowledging the receipt of the
donation of this impressive book collection will be placed on the wall of Bilkent
Library's lobby.
Following the ceremony, the Center for Turkish Literature will present a panel discussion
at 6 p.m. in the 'C' Block Auditorium in the FEASS building. The event will pay tribute to
and evaluate the contributions of the critic, scholar, poet, and short story writer Cevdet
Kudret. The speakers will be Prof. Dr. Metin And, Yusuf Çötüksöken, Dr. Efnan
Dervisoğlu, and Assoc. Prof. Handan İnci. The panel discussion will end at 7:30
p.m. It is free and open to everyone.
Long-Time Head of
International Relations Department to Step Down as Chair
Prof. Dr. Ali Karaosmanoğlu, who assumed the chairmanship of the Bilkent University
Department of International Relations shortly after its foundation, has decided after
nearly 20 years of leading the department to step down from his position as Chair and to
stay on as a member of the IR faculty. In addition to his long-time leadership position at
Bilkent University and his invaluable efforts in the building of the Bilkent IR
department, Dr. Karaosmanoğlu is widely recognized as an icon of the Turkish
International Relations community. (continues)

Awards

TÜBA (Turkish Academy of Sciences) announced the Encouragement Awards, which were first
introduced in 1995 to support high-profile scientists in the fields of social sciences.
Asst. Prof. Hüseyin Çağrı Sağlam (ECON) was awarded this year for his acclaimed
publications on Lagrange multipliers, boundary conditions and optimal control problems
that play a significant role in the analysis of economic growth models.
In 2001, the Turkish Academy of Sciences (TÜBA) introduced the Program of Awarding Young
Scientists (GEBİP), to encourage successful young scientists in the fields of natural
sciences, engineering, medicine and social sciences. This year, 26 young scientists were
awarded within the context of this program. Asst. Prof. Mehmet Bayındır (PHYS), Asst.
Prof. Vakur Behçet Ertürk (EE), and Asst. Prof. Refet Soykan Gürkaynak (ECON) from
Bilkent were among the 26 scientists receiving the Outstanding Young Scientist Award
(TÜBA-GEBİP).
Hilmi Yavuz Awarded
Honorary Doctorate
Hilmi Yavuz, senior lecturer in the Department of Turkish Literature, was awarded a Doctor
Honoris Causa degree by Mimar Sinan Güzel Sanatlar University Senate, (İstanbul), in
recognition of his contributions to Turkish literature.
The title will be conferred upon him on May 21, 2007 at a special
ceremony to be held at MSGSU Auditorium.
