Koray Aydın, a third year PhD student in the Department of Physics was selected as the
2007 SPIE Scholarship winner. The mission of the SPIE (The International Society of
Optical Engineering) Scholarships and Grants Program, established in 1978, is to
recognize, assist and encourage, SPIE student members and academic organizations
throughout the world with outstanding potential for long-range contribution to the field
of optics and photonics. The award consists of a certificate, and $2000. Koray Aydın is
the first Turkish recipient of this prestigious scholarship award.
Mr. Aydın conducts his research studies under the supervision of Prof. Ekmel Özbay at
the Bilkent Nanotechnology Research Center (NANOTAM). During his PhD thesis, he has mainly
concentrated on metamaterials with novel properties, such as negative permeability,
negative refraction, and subwavelength resolution. He has authored and co-authored more
than 25 Science Citation Index papers in the past 5 years. His advisor, Prof. Ekmel
Özbay, describes Aydın’s achievement: "Koray made significant contributions to
the field of metamaterials and photonic crystals. He worked really hard and played a key
role in our research group. This is a well-deserved award for him. This award is
significant proof of the quality of our graduate programs here at Bilkent University and
research activities in our research center, NANOTAM."
